Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief 2015
Directed by: Alex Gibney
Starring: Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Lawrence Wright, Mike Rinder, Marty Rathbun, Paul Haggis
Wow. This film left me feeling unsettled to say the least. A similar feeling to the one I had when I was tempted to walk out of the theater during The Master (2012 Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson, Starring Philip Seymour-Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams). Surprisingly, that tragic fictional film was based on experiences in the Church of Scientology. An important documentary interviewing people who were leaders in the Church of Scientology and families torn apart by the profit-mongering religion. You learn that the leaders are brainwashing and abusing members of the church – blackmailing them to keep them involved in this sci-fi of a religion. They had A BILLION DOLLARS IN PROFITS THAT THEY FOUGHT AND WON TO BE TAX EXEMPT FROM BECAUSE THEY’RE A “CHURCH.” Ew… The abuse of the government system for capitalistic means makes me sick… In this case and all cases from Wall Street to things like estate taxes.
Interestingly, John Travolta completely denies everything the documentary says in this article in The Guardian. To me, they have no reason to tear down the religion unless they were truly put in the horrible situations by the Church they express in this documentary. The documentary even expressed brainwashing Tom Cruise into “disconnecting” from Nicole Kidman and bribing him with nice cars and home entertainment systems to get him to come back to promoting the Church and being audited (you have to watch the film to see how much complete bullshit and brainwashing takes place in the auditing process). They also have a doctrine against homosexuality – WOW. It’s a sad film, but hugely necessary for people to see and be reminded that we haven’t grown as a society as much as we wish. There are still people that will blindly follow causes that are for the worse of the world and not the better – well, that are really only bettering the wealth of the leaders, that is.
